Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP)
Retinitis Pigmentosa - RP refers to a rather rare hereditary retinal disease affecting approximately 1 in 4,000 people in the United States. Onset of symptoms typically begins in adolescence and most patients have significant visual loss by the age of 40. Symptoms of RP depend on the form of RP and can include:
- progressive loss of vision
- night blindness
- reduced peripheral vision
- loss of color perception
Your Mercy Eye physician can diagnose RP using a visual acuity test and dilated eye exam; treatment at this point focuses on nutritional therapies.
