Mitral Valve Repair

The mitral valve is one of four heart valves. If the mitral valve becomes diseased it will not function properly – either because it leaks or is too stiff and limits the flow of blood. If your cardiologist diagnoses you with mitral valve disease you will need either mitral valve repair or replacement. The cardiothoracic surgeons at the Mercy Center for Robotic Surgery use the daVinci robotic-assisted surgical system to perform mitral valve repair procedures. By repairing instead of replacing your diseased mitral valve you may experience numerous benefits including:
  • no need to take blood thinners for life
  • reduced need for future valve operations
  • reduced risk of surgical complications
  • higher long-term survival rate
  • improved heart function
The daVinci system enables your surgeon to operate without having to crack open your breastbone to access your heart (sternotomy) and instead make a much smaller incision. The daVinci system also provides your surgeon with much greater control and dexterity when operating within your heart.
