"A Wish Come True for Local Boy"
Hunter B., 8, became an honorary firefighter and EMT, visited the Mercy Hospital of Defiance Emergency Room and received a ride in a Life Flight helicopter on July 12. Staff at Mercy Hospital of Defiance and Life Flight were happy to join forces with Defiance firemen and EMTs, to grant Hunter’s wishes. Hunter has Takayasu’s arteritis, an inflammatory disease that affects blood vessels.
“Our fire department has transported Hunter on multiple occasions due to his illness,” said Capt. Edward Bohn. “We’ve gotten to know Hunter and his family and wanted to do something special for him. Hunter’s step father wanted to bring him to the fire station to meet our crew and one thing led to another and we decided to make him an honorary firefighter and EMT.”
Defiance Mayor Bob Armstrong swore Hunter in as an honorary fireman, and city firefighters, and EMTs presented him with his own gear. Then Dodi Thompson, Vice President for
Patient Care Services, and Renee Davis, ER Manager, made Hunter an honorary ER captain and presented him with Mercy shirts.
The Life Flight crew also presented Hunter with gifts and gear and then took him and his mother, Laura R., for a flight around Defiance.
Hunter and his family then returned to the firehouse for a real fireman’s lunch.
“It was great,” Laura said. “It is hard for Hunter, with his illness, to be unable to do so many things that healthy kids enjoy, so this has been really cool for him. It really lifted his spirits.”
