"Mercy Willard Saves Patient's Life"
Bob E. sought care at two other hospitals and with an internist before coming to Mercy Hospital of Willard, where, he says, Dr. Stanbery (David Stanbery, MD, General Surgery) saved his life by diagnosing and treating his ruptured appendix.
“I went to two different emergency departments on two separate days and neither could figure out what was wrong with me,” Bob said. “I was referred to an internist who also failed to diagnose or help me. I was in excruciating pain. Finally I decided to try Mercy. I had heard they provide good care there. I went in to the ED on Friday night, five days after my symptoms began, and they did a CAT scan and found my bowels were blocked. They brought Dr. Stanbery in and he told me he needed to perform exploratory surgery.”
During the surgery, Dr. Stanbery not only determined the cause of Bob’s pain – a ruptured appendix and resulting multiple abscesses and infections – he was also able to repair the damage.
“Dr. Stanbery was so thorough and methodical,” Bob said, “and so were the nurses. Dr. Stanbery told me there was a 30 percent chance per abscess of infection recurring, but thanks to the follow-up care the nurses provided, that didn’t happen.”
Bob spent 17 days in Mercy Willard’s ICU.
“I guess I expected the nurses to act like taking care of me was just their job, but they made me feel at home, talked to me, related to me and did a great job of comforting me in my time of need,” he said. “It was really nice to see such care and warmth from them. They made me feel like I was their number one priority all the time. They all just radiated with love every day.”
Dr. Stanbery and the nurses at Mercy Willard made a real difference in the life of their patient by providing him with the best, most personal care, and Bob is very grateful for all of their efforts.
“I was really facing a life-or-death situation when I came to Mercy,” Bob said. “I pulled through and am doing great now. Dr. Stanbery is an amazing doctor. I wouldn’t be here without him and those wonderful nurses. It was remarkable how they took care of me.”
