Tips for Starting a Fitness Routine

Even though the new year starts in January, there's something about fall that makes us think of new beginnings. Fall is a good time to start an exercise routine. The weather isn't too hot or too cold, so you can't use it as an excuse. Here are some ideas that can help you get started:

First, check with your doctor to make sure you're in the right physical condition.

  • Get the people in your life on board with your new routine. If you have children and a spouse, explain to them that you'll be carving out time for yourself to exercise because it's the healthy thing to do. If you'd like, you can even encourage them to join you. See whether you have friends who'd like to join you as well. The more support you have, the easier it is to stick with it.
  • Talk with people you know who have been successful at setting up an exercise regimen. Ask them what has made them stay motivated, what you can expect when you get started, how you can keep from getting discouraged, etc.
  • Set goals. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to become more toned? Are you trying to improve a health condition, such as diabetes or high blood pressure? Whatever your goals are, write them down. Then track your progress as time goes by.
  • If possible, schedule a few meetings with a personal trainer. Tell the trainer what your goals are. It's a good way to devise a program that will set you up for success.
  • Realize the importance of choosing activities that you enjoy. If you've never ever liked swimming, it's probably not going to be something you'll stick with.
  • If you skip your routine for days in a row, don't let it put you in a funk. Ups and downs are normal. Get back into it. You'll feel better as soon as you do.
