Surgical Oncology

Surgery may be used in various stages of your cancer treatment plan - to assist in diagnosis or as part of the treatment. Surgery treats the cancer only in the location that the surgery is performed, but offers an increased chance of recovery for many types of cancer.

Most people with cancer will have some type of surgery during the course of their treatment. However, surgery is not always an option with all types of cancer that involve major organs, blood vessels, or if the cancer has spread from the original site. Also, a patient's general health has to be considered when determining a course of action.

Surgery is only one of many cancer services that Mercy offers to our patients and is often used in conjunction with other treatment methods.
