Specialized care for expectant mothers and their babies

Our MFM’s work hand-in-hand with your obstetrician to develop a plan of care tailored to your personal needs and medical history. Though you may see our specialist several times throughout your pregnancy, your own obstetrician will continue to manage the pregnancy and deliver your baby. The MFM is usually not present at the birth of your baby, but may consult with a neonatologist, a pediatrician who specializes in the care of newborns with special needs, before your delivery to make sure all necessary services are in place.

Teamwork and good communication between the MFM’s, your obstetrician and the neonatologist ensure both mother and baby receive the best possible care.

Drs. Sriram Perni and Claudel Jean-Pierre provide the following specialized services:

  • First-trimester ultrasound screening (nuchal translucency and nasal-bone assessment) – This prenatal test can help assess your baby's risk of having Down syndrome and some other chromosomal abnormalities as well as major congenital heart problems. The NT test uses ultrasound to measure the clear (translucent) space in the tissue at the back of your developing baby's neck It's usually offered along with a blood test.
  • 3D/4D ultrasound – These are types of transabdominal utltrasounds. A 3D image looks more lifelike. A 4D image is similar to a 3D image but shows movement. (Most of the ultrasound images are completed in 2D.)
  • Amniocentesis- In this procedure, a needle is inserted into the uterus and a small amount of fluid is removed from the sac around your baby.
  • Non-stress testing- An evaluation using a fetal monitor to assess your baby’s well-being.
  • Fetal echocardiography – An in-depth evaluation of your baby using sound waves to evaluate the structure and function of your baby’s heart.
  • Ongoing communication with each patient’s OB/GYN – The MFM team remains in contact with your obstetrician throughout your pregnancy.
  • Support from an entire team of pediatric subspecialists – The broadest range of subspecialty care available in the city of Toledo through Mercy Children's Hospital and in conjunction with the University of Michigan.
