Conditions - Atherosclerotic Disease
Atherosclerosis, Arteriosclerosis, or Arterialsclerosis
Atherosclerotic disease is caused by a buildup of plaque in your arteries, preventing the regular flow of oxygenated blood to your heart, other vital organs, and throughout your body. Different diseases can be caused depending on which arteries are affected. While some risk factors for atherosclerotic disease cannot be controlled (such as family history and gender), some can such as smoking, unhealthy diet, and lack of exercise.
If you are at risk for atherosclerotic disease your Mercy cardiologist can use several diagnostic tests including blood tests,
electrocardiogram,
24-hour holter monitoring,
echocardiogram and
angiography to determine the extent of your condition and possible treatment options.
